Customs brokers are companies licensed, regulated and empowered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to assist importers and exporters in meeting Federal requirements governing imports and exports.  Brokers submit necessary information and appropriate payments to CBP on behalf of their clients to clear customs and in-turn charge their clients a fee for this service.  Currently, there are approximately 14,000 customs brokers in the U.S.  This independent customs broker has established long-standing relationships and a reputation for high-quality customer service for a good mix of customers across many industry sectors.  The brokerage does approximately 80% imports, 10% exports, and 10% domestic transportation.

This is an excellent opportunity to own an established provider of customs clearinghouse services with solid cash flow and the ability to grow revenues by diversifying its services into international logistics and domestic transportation.

The current broker is willing to provide his customs license for as long as required for a nominal monthly fee or until the buyer acquires his/her customs broker license.
Competition:The customs brokerage industry is highly fragmented. The top 50 firms account for about 33% of industry sales. The overall industry includes freight forwarders, international shipping agents, and customs brokers. Both imports and exports of goods hit a record level in 2014, then fell in 2015 and 2016, but regained momentum in 2017. Even with recent trade tariffs, import and export levels have been increasing steadily through 2019. The top US exports include motor vehicles and parts, household items, furniture, food items, spacecraft, aircraft and parts, petroleum products, gold, and soybeans. The top US imports include motor vehicles, petroleum products, household items, furniture, food items, computers, cellular telephones, and pharmaceuticals. Major trading partners include China, Canada, Mexico, Japan, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.
Growth Potential:Significant growth opportunities can come from diversifying the customs brokerage service into freight forwarding for international shipping and domestic transportation. Significant growth can come from increasing the firm’s database of current customers for import/export via new business development. Finally, the company’s web presence could be enhanced along with utilizing social media, SEO, PPC, and other digital marketing strategies to capture new business.
Training/Support:Owner will provide his customs license and/or consulting services for as long as needed for a nominal monthly fee.
Sale Reason:After 16+ years growing the business, the owner is looking to retire.
